A fall guide for guests of The Glenway

Fall is the valley's best-kept argument for itself — foliage that peaks in mid-October, Oktoberfest pours a few towns over, and an apple stand fifteen minutes down the hill worth building a morning around.

Things to Do

Fall moves through this valley ridge by ridge, and it doesn't linger — peak color usually lasts about two weeks, somewhere in the first half of October. Everything else about the season follows the same script: the breweries start pouring Oktoberfest and pumpkin beers, Joey's puts pumpkin cheesecake pancakes on the menu, the orchard down the hill starts turning out cider donuts, and Waynesville's Main Street closes down for its biggest Saturday of the year. Here's how we'd spend it.

Foliage & Views

Where to watch it happen

Peak color usually lands in the first half of October, though it moves through the elevations at its own pace — the high balds turn first, the valley floor lags a week or two behind. These three give you the widest views without eating the whole day.

Blue Ridge Parkway · Milepost 451.2

Waterrock Knob

The highest overlook easily reached from the Parkway near Maggie Valley, and the color show here is the reason to go before ski season starts. On a clear October afternoon the ridgelines run every shade of red and gold into four states. Get there within an hour of sunset — the light does something to the valleys below that a phone camera won’t quite catch.

Black Balsam Knob

Above treeline for most of the approach, which means the bald itself turns amber while the forest below is still working through its color change — two seasons visible from one spot. Best in the back half of October, once the lower elevations catch up.

Graveyard Fields

An open meadow along the Yellowstone Prong that turns copper and rust before most of the surrounding forest does — the low shrubs color early here. Easy enough for the whole family, and close enough to the road that it won’t eat your afternoon.

The Elk Rut

Cataloochee runs on its own calendar. The rut peaks in early-to-mid October, and the combination of fog, color, and bugling elk in the meadows along Rough Fork is worth the drive on its own terms. Go at dawn, or you’ll mostly find fog.

Fall Beers

Oktoberfest, Down the Hill

Boojum and Frog Level both run an Oktoberfest and a pumpkin beer through the season, and last fall both were good enough to remember a year later. Sylva’s breweries tend to join in too — worth checking Untappd before the twenty-five-minute drive, since the seasonal lists move.

The same downtown anchor it is the rest of the year, but the kitchen leans into the season too — heartier plates start showing up on the fall menu once the weather turns, and the back patio is still a good place to eat them before it gets too cold to sit outside. Order the seasonal beer before it’s gone; Boojum doesn’t keep it around past November.

Frog Level’s own fall lineup runs alongside its regular pours, and the low-slung neighborhood it sits in has a different feel once the leaves start turning — quieter, a little more worn-in. A good second stop after Boojum if you’re making a Waynesville evening of it.

Twenty-five-plus apple varieties grown on the property, plus their own pears, peaches, and a rotating list of fall vegetables. It isn’t a pick-your-own operation — the apples are already off the tree and into the stand by the time you get there. That’s beside the point once you’ve had the cider donuts, though. They’re the best reason on this list to get in the car, hot out of the fryer and worth the line at the bakery counter. Open August through Christmas Eve, seven days a week.

The Apple Harvest Festival

Downtown Waynesville · Main Street · 15 min

Downtown Waynesville closes Main Street for its biggest Saturday of the year every October — the Apple Harvest Festival, running since the late 1980s. Vendors, live music, apple everything, and a crowd that fills the sidewalks end to end. Free to attend, and Boojum and the rest of Main Street are all part of the day.

It’s one of Waynesville’s busiest weekends. If you’re headed down for it, park early — the walk from your car may take longer than the festival itself.
