Cataloochee Ski Area is right up the road with slopes for every level. Tube World sits nearby for snow tubing — same ownership, same good time. Hatley Pointe, Sapphire Valley, Sugar Mountain, and Beech Mountain are all within day-trip range.

Things to Do

Southern Appalachian skiing doesn't get the attention it deserves. The mountains are real, the elevation is real, and when the snowmaking runs overnight, the conditions are as good as anything you'll find east of the Rockies. Cataloochee is your nearest option — close enough to ski before lunch. The bigger resorts are worth the drive when you want more vertical, more terrain, or just a full day out.

The Home Mountain

Cataloochee Ski Area sits less than 20 minutes from The Glenway — close enough to ski a morning, come back for lunch, and decide whether you're going back out. Tube World runs under the same ownership down in the valley on Soco Road, which makes it an easy call when the group splits between skiers and tubers.

The home mountain. Close enough to ski a morning, come back for lunch, and decide whether you're going back out. Eighteen trails across 50 acres: 44% beginner, 39% intermediate, 17% expert. The Cat Cage Terrain Park handles ramps, rails, and boxes; the upper mountain has two genuine black diamond runs. Every slope is lit for night skiing; on a fresh powder evening, that upper mountain is as quiet as it gets. Peak elevation is 5,400 feet, which keeps the snow cold longer than the lower-elevation Carolinas resorts. Season runs early November through late March.

Tube World is Cataloochee's sister operation down in the valley on Soco Road — about four miles from the ski slopes and even closer to The Glenway. Multiple lanes, a conveyor lift to the top, no skill required, and it's the natural call when the group splits between skiers and sliders. Sessions are timed and book up fast on weekends and holidays; grab tickets ahead.

Go Bigger

Western North Carolina and the surrounding mountains have more ski terrain than most people realize. Hatley Pointe, Sapphire Valley, Sugar Mountain, and Beech Mountain all sit within day-trip range — each with a different character, a different size, and a different reason to make the drive.

Hatley Pointe

Formerly Wolf Ridge, Hatley Pointe has reinvented itself as something genuinely different: a reservation-only boutique mountain resort in Mars Hill, north of Asheville, with daily capacity limits and a service model built around actually getting you on the mountain instead of in a lift line. A tight roster of slopes across Blue Ridge terrain, and a deliberate decision to keep crowds out. All lift tickets and rentals must be purchased in advance — which is a minor inconvenience that pays for itself the moment you arrive.

Sapphire Valley

Sapphire Valley is a small, family-oriented resort near Cashiers — two gentle slopes, a multi-lane tube park, and an ice skating rink. It's not a destination mountain, but that's the point: affordable lift tickets, no crowds, and an accessible, low-pressure day for families with young kids or groups that include people skiing for the first or second time.

Sugar Mountain is the reason Banner Elk has a ski town. At 1,200 feet of vertical, it's the highest-vertical resort in the Carolinas, and it skis significantly bigger than the other options in this part of the Southeast. Twenty-one trails from wide-open beginner terrain to the genuine pitch of Gunther's Way, serviced by multiple chairs including the Summit Express detachable quad. Snowmaking coverage is comprehensive and reliable, which matters when natural snow in the Carolinas requires patience.

Beech Mountain sits at 5,506 feet at its summit — the highest ski resort in eastern North America. That elevation is the whole story: it means snow quality that holds longer than anything else in the region, and temperatures that stay genuinely cold through January and February when the lower resorts are struggling. Seventeen runs across 95 skiable acres, with 830 feet of vertical. The summit runs have real pitch; the lower sections keep it accessible. The resort has invested steadily in snowmaking and grooming, and it shows.

Beech Mountain surprised us. The elevation keeps the snow quality better than anything else we skied in the South. We'll be back.

Season

Cataloochee and the higher-elevation resorts typically fire up their snowmaking in November and run into late March. The smaller, lower resorts ski best mid-December through early March.

Snow Conditions

Natural snowfall in the Smokies is real but unpredictable. All major resorts run comprehensive snowmaking — check webcams and snow reports before you go.

Elevation Edge

Higher elevation means better snow. Beech Mountain at 5,506 ft holds powder longer than anything else in the region. The Glenway sits at 3,543 ft — cold nights are the rule in January and February.
