Skiing has its own guide — this one is for everything else: a Jeep parade lit up like a float, a train to the North Pole out of Bryson City, Fraser firs cut fresh off a Waynesville mountainside, and the stretch of tree lightings between here and Sylva. December earns its own itinerary.

Things to Do

Cataloochee and Tube World have their own guide, and if snow sports are the whole trip, start there. This one covers the rest of the season — the parades and tree lightings scattered through Maggie Valley, Waynesville, and Sylva, the train and light show worth the drive to Bryson City, and the one day in Asheville worth doing properly. Most of it runs from the first weekend of December through New Year's; a few things start as early as mid-November.

The valley does its own small version of the season without asking you to get in the car — a parade down the main road, a tree cut fresh off the mountain behind it. This is the closest any of it gets.

Dozens of Jeeps roll down Soco Road strung with lights, wreaths, and the occasional inflatable reindeer strapped to a roof rack — the valley’s own holiday parade, close enough to walk to from most of town. The route runs the north side of Soco Road near Moody Farm and Ghost Town, and most years it turns into a Toys for Tots drive along the way. Once the Jeeps pass, everyone sticks around for cookies, cocoa, and Santa.

The retail stand sits at the Exxon where Dellwood Road meets 276, restocked daily with fresh-cut Fraser firs off the Boyd family’s own mountain. They’ll rope one to your roof, and wreaths and stands are there if you didn’t pack either. The U-cut fields farther up sell out fast in a good year — this stand is the reliable fallback once they do.

Look for the big red barn on Jonathan Creek Road — it’s a wedding venue most of the year, but come December the family who owns it opens the surrounding fields for U-cut Fraser fir. Bring a saw or borrow theirs. The selection thins out as the month goes on; they usually wind down around the 20th.

A Night in Waynesville

Fifteen minutes gets you Waynesville’s own parade, a stout that only shows up once the temperature drops, and a way out of cooking if a week of it starts to wear thin.

Waynesville runs its parade after dark on purpose — the floats, marching bands, decorated Jeeps and tractors, and horse-drawn wagon rides all read better once the lights can do their job. It winds down Main Street from First Presbyterian to Bogart’s, with Santa closing out the night. Shops and restaurants stay open through it, some with a musician set up on the sidewalk.

If a week in the mountains means someone in your group is on cooking duty every night, Haywood Smokehouse runs catering out of the same Waynesville spot — smoked meats and sides by the pan, enough for a full house. Worth a call ahead if you’d rather spend a holiday evening at the table than in the kitchen.

Same downtown anchor it is the rest of the year, different beer at the front of the list. Nightfall replaces the hop-forward lineup once the temperature drops, and the taproom does its best work on a cold night — good timing if you’re already in town for the parade.

Sylva runs its own full holiday calendar and doesn’t get much credit for it outside Jackson County — worth the extra ten minutes past Waynesville if you want the small-town version without the crowd.

The tree lighting happens on the old courthouse steps above Main Street, with a school choir performance and Santa working the crowd at the Chamber’s visitor center. The parade follows two days later, moving down Main at a pace built for stroller traffic and dogs in sweaters.

The same farmers market that runs Sylva’s growing season closes it out with one more Saturday in December — local makers, wreaths, and gifts that didn’t come off a container ship, set along the river at Bridge Park. Smaller and slower than parade weekend, which is its own kind of appeal.

By Rail to the North Pole

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad · Nov 6–Dec 31

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad runs its Polar Express out of the Bryson City depot every night through the season — a seventy-five-minute round trip with hot cocoa, a reading of the story, and Santa boarding at the midpoint to hand out the first silver bell of the night. It’s built for kids, but the steam engine and the dark ride through the gorge work on adults too.

Dates sell out months out. If it’s on the list, buy tickets before you book the rest of the trip.

Millions of Lights, One Drive

Smoky Mountain Christmas Light Spectacular · $20/carload

A drive-through light show a few miles from the Polar Express depot — LED arches, a snowflake tunnel, a full manger scene, all viewed from the car with the heat running. It sounds slight until you’re actually in it. Pair it with an earlier Polar Express ride and one drive covers two nights’ worth of Christmas.

Christmas at Biltmore

Candlelight Christmas Evenings · Nov 3–Jan 10

The splurge day of the season. Biltmore decorates the house floor to ceiling — a live tree in the banquet hall that takes a small crew to trim — and Candlelight Christmas Evenings turns the daytime tour into something quieter after dark: a self-guided walk through the house by candlelight, followed by the gardens and Antler Hill Village.

Buy tickets by mid-September for the early-bird discount. The season sells out predictably by December.

Winter Lights at the Arboretum

NC Arboretum · Mid-Nov–Early Jan

A quieter alternative to Biltmore’s crowds and an easy add to the same Asheville day — over a million lights strung through the Arboretum’s gardens, including a Polar-Express-themed model train and a fifty-foot animated tree synced to music. Walkable, stroller-friendly, and priced by the carload rather than the head — a fraction of what a Biltmore evening runs once everyone in the car has their own ticket.

A Word on Winter Driving

Before You Head Down the Mountain

At 3,543 feet, the chalet catches snow and ice before the valley floor does, and Soco Road can be clear in town while the driveway up is still frozen. Check the forecast before a Bryson City or Asheville day, and give the Blue Ridge Parkway a wide berth in weather — the Park Service closes stretches of it without much notice, and the high overlooks are the first to go.

Some of the best winter days here don’t involve leaving at all. The hot tub does something different at twenty degrees than it does in July, and a fire going with snow on the deck is its own kind of holiday event.
